The Crest girls found themselves in another hole that they couldnt quite dig their way out of on Tuesday, losing 37-30 to Erie in the first round of Humboldts annual preseason basketball tournament.
The loss moves them to 0-2 on the early season.
The defeat comes just days after their home opening loss to Southern Coffey County where they let the Lady Titans advance early on in the contest before digging in and fighting back.
I told the girls that we need to figure out why we like to start from behind, head coach Megan Mason said. We also for some reason dont want to be aggressive right away. We look good during warm-ups but when we get on the floor its a different story.
In Tuesdays game, Erie got out to an 11-1 lead before the Crest girls scored their first bucket of the game with only 30 seconds left in the first quarter.
Things didnt get much better throughout the second quarter. It wasnt until the last several minutes that Crest began to chip away and use a 9-0 run to get within six points by the half.
We started to be more confident with driving, Mason said. What got us in trouble in the first quarter was all of the fouls made us timid. But once some shots start to fall, they were able to be more aggressive and confident again. Once we started cutting toward the basketball we were able to make some great plays.
Erie jumped out to another double-digit lead after halftime time but the Lady Lancers pulled themselves closer again and got within seven at 29-22 at the end of the quarter.
That seven-point deficit was the closest that Crest got to a full comeback though as Erie pulled back ahead by 11 midway through the fourth quarter and the Red Devils were able to keep it around there until the very end of the game when the Lady Lancers managed to get back within seven.
Senior Regan Godderz led her team with eight points followed by seven points for senior Jewell Armstrong and six from senior Camryn Strickler. Sophomore Aubree Holloran had five points and four for junior Rylee Beckamon.
The Lady Lancers will take on Humboldt at around 7 p.m. for the second day of the tournament on Thursday.
