EUREKA — Lowering his personal-best time by three-tenths of a second, Dustin Davis-Jones claimed the top medal in Tuesday’s 2010 Eureka High Invitational cross country varsity boys’ race.
Crest High’s Davis-Jones had run a 5K race last Thursday in 17 minutes. 41.7 seconds. On Tuesday, he won the race in 17:41.4 edging out Cody Drake of Dexter/Cedar Vale, who was second in 17:47.
Also back to form was Crest teammate Trevor Holman, who was hampered last week with illness, finishing 13th in 18:57. Humboldt High’s Reece Criger crossed the line in 14th in 18:59.3.
Davis-Jones and Holman led the Lancers to a tie for third place with Central. Both teams scored 90 points but Central won the tiebreaker so Crest was fourth. Burlington won the team title with 64 points.
Yates Center High’s Paul Stockebrand ran 22nd in 19:48.9, missing out on 21st by one second. Right behind him was Crest’s David Womelsdorf in 23rd at 19:54 and Chris Brallier in 24th at 19:57. Jory Ramsey of Crest placed 52nd in 23:45.9.
“Paul ran in fifth place for the first mile then the gorilla jumped on his back in the second mile dropping him back to 25th. But in the last mile he fought back to finish 22nd,” said Yates Center cross country coach Kevin Barnes
Crest’s Italy Loving posted her best time of the season to finish 14th in the girls’ varsity 4K race. She ran the course in 17:54.1 with teammate Addie Rhea in 24th in 19:27.4. Humboldt’s Raquel Hill took 38th in 21:49.
Humboldt’s Kelsey Cramer placed seventh in the girls’ junior varsity race in 21:54.7. Crest’s Erica Holman was 18th in 25:55.
In the boys’ junior varsity race, Humboldt’s Nick Keazer ran second in 20:54.2 and his teammate was fifth in 21:29.1. Yates Center’s Sam Aguirre finished ninth in 22:34.1.
Also placing for Humboldt were Logan Yokum in 15th at 23:42, Michael Davis in 25th in 26:43 and Kendall West in 27th in 29:58.
Kyler Bowen of Crest placed 10th in the eighth-grade boys’ run in 16:15.5.
On Thursday, Yates Center and Crest compete in the Jayhawk-Linn High Invitational in Mound City.
