Cub squads fall to Caney Valley

CANEY — A seven-point lead after three quarters quickly turned into an insurmountable deficit Tuesday for Humboldt High’s boys.

The Cubs led host Caney Valley 38-31 headed into the fourth quarter before the Bullpups closed the game with a 20-6 run to defeat Humboldt 51-44.

The loss, in the final game for Humboldt before Christmas, drops the Cubs’ record to 3-3.

Humboldt led 8-7 after one period and 20-14 at halftime.

Noah Thornbrugh led the Cubs with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Caleb Vanatta and Tanner McNutt each had eight points. Nathan Whitcomb scored four points, while Hunter Murrow and Trey Johnson scored two each.

McNutt added six rebounds and five assists. Murrow had two steals.

Humboldt shot 31 percent from the field and connected on only 2 of 12 free throws.

IN GIRLS’ action, Caney Valley rolled to a 72-24 win.

Whitney Strack scored six points to lead the Lady Cubs, while Taylyn Wells and Breanne Kline scored five points apiece. Morgan Morris notched four points. Sheri Middleton and Lakota Wilson scored two points each.

Middleton pulled in four rebounds, Kline registered three steals, while Middleton, Morrison, Kindahl Young and Haley Riebel all registered one block apiece.

The Humboldt squads resume play Jan. 6 at home against Yates Center.
