The Humboldt Middle School A-Team Cubs blasted Bluestem 39-4 while shutting out the Lions in the first and fourth quarters of Monday’s contest.

After a slow start with only a single free-throw in the first quarter, the Cubs defense kept them in the game before a 14-point second and third quarter put them well ahead before the final whistle.

“We struggled from the floor to start the game,” Humboldt coach Jeremy Weilert said. “We were 0-12 in the first quarter and finally hit a jump shot early in the second quarter to get things rolling.  We went on to shoot 48% from the floor in the final three quarters.”

Elijah Irby had a team-leading 10 points, followed by Waylon Johnson with 6 points, then Aaron Wille, Mason Mueller and Tate Thomas with 4 points each. Wille had eight rebounds, while Johnson, Irby and Nate Froggatte had five boards each.

Froggatte also had four steals, followed by Johnson and Wille with three each. He also hit the Cubs’ only 3-pointer.

B-Team can’t recover

In Humboldt B-Team action, the Cubs had a slow start and could never catch fire.

With just 7 points in the first half, and 6 points in the second, the Cubs could not keep up with the Lions despite Monday’s strong defensive effort.

William Davis had 5 points, followed by Zaden Mellen and Ryker Wrestler with 4 points each. Wrestler six rebounds, followed by Williams with four boards, then Marcus Whitcomb and Ryker Platt with two rebounds each.
