PLEASANTON — Crest High’s boys struggled both ends of the floor Friday and wound up losing to the same Jayhawk-Linn High squad Crest defeated by 16 points earlier this season.
The Lancers’ 50-45 overtime loss knocks Crest into the third-place game today in the Pleasanton Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament. The Lancers (7-3) will take on Prairie View.
Elsewhere in tournament action, Humboldt throttled host Pleasanton High 48-19 and Uniontown High defeated Altoona-Midway High 43-36. The wins mean the Cubs and Eagles will face each other today in the fifth-place game.
“Defensively, we were not very sound,” Lancer head coach Travis Hermreck said. “Offensively, we stood around. We were in our comfort zone shooting three-pointers when the other teams went into a zone.”
But Crest struggled against Jayhawk-Linn’s man-to-man defense.
Still, Crest had its shots to win in the closely fought contest.
Jayhawk-Linn led 12-10 after one period. The squads were knotted at 18-18 at halftime. Crest nudged in front 31-28 after three periods before the Jayhawks tied the contest at the end of regulation 41-41.
Jayhawk-Linn outscored Crest 9-4 in the overtime.
Kyle Hammond scored 22 points and Dexter Wiley had eight for the Lancers.
Seth Gabbert’s 15 led the Jayhawks. Jake Rowe added 10.
HUMBOLDT’S defense was stellar against Pleasanton. The Cubs led 11-8 after one quarter and 16-10 at the break. The Cub offense began to click in the third quarter as Humboldt rattled off a 19-6 scoring advantage to lead 35-16. Humboldt ended the game on a 13-3 run.
Noah Thornbrugh paced Humboldt with 12 points, followed by Blake Crawford with eight.
Baker Inman’s five points led Pleasanton.
UNIONTOWN fell behind early, 10-7, before outscoring Altoona-Midway 16-9 in the second quarter to take a 23-19 lead. The Eagle lead grew to 35-27 after three quarters.
Brenton Esslinger did most of the offensive damage for Uniontown, pouring in 17 points. Robert Kuns added nine and Zach Travis eight.
Trenton Engleman led Altoona-Midway with eight.
