The Humboldt Middle School Cubs hope for a quick turnaround following a sweep Thursday while on the road against Cherryvale.

The HMS A-Team fell 50-21, the B-Team fell 36-34 and the C-Team fell 26-25, but HMS coach Jeremy Weilert did not feel it was a wasted effort.

“We played about as well in the first half as we have all year,” Weilert said. “Hats off to Cherryvale.  They are a good team.  They play tremendous defense and really push the ball.  I am proud of the strides we have taken this year. “

In A-Team action, leading 7-6 after the first quarter, the Cubs could not maintain their momentum as Cherryvale took the lead in the second quarter and built upon it from there.

Humboldt’s Nate Froggatte had 6 points. Elijah Irby scored 5 points and had  eight rebounds.

Waylon Johnson scored 4 points and led the team in rebounds with nine.

Christian Mataka, Ryker Wrestler and Tate Thomas had two points each.

In B-Team action, the Cubs held their own after finishing the first half tied 15-15 with Cherryvale.

The B-Team failed to maintain their momentum as the Chargers held them to just 3 points in the third quarter while scoring 15.

Humboldt went on a 16-6 run to end the game but it was not enough to close the third-quarter gap.

“Cherryvale started the third quarter on a 7-0 run and ended the quarter on a 6-0 run,” Weilert said.

“We were down 12 points going into the fourth. We went on a 10-0 run late in the fourth and tied it up with 34 seconds left.

“They took the lead with 10 seconds to go.  We just couldn’t get a good look at the buzzer.”

Eli Seibert had a team-leading 12 points for the B-Team, followed by Lane Newman with 11. Ryker Wrestler, who tied Ryker Platt for third in team scoring with 4 points each, had a team-leading five rebounds, followed by Seibert with four and Oliver LeClair with two.

Seibert also had a team-leading six steals, followed by Newman with four steals.

The C-TeAm fell by the narrowest margin, 26-26.
