The Humboldt Middle School Cubs earned their first win of the 2025 season after edging Eureka 14-6 while on the road Thursday.

Thanks to a 20-yard touchdown run by Elijah Irby, followed by a successful 2-point conversion by  Mason Gunderman, Humbold established an early lead, then added to it late in the fourth on another Irby run, this time from the 1-yard line, to seal the victory.

“On the final drive of the game in the 4th quarter, the Tornadoes drove the length of the field down to the 6yd line of Humboldt and with 8 seconds to go, threw a pass and it was intercepted by Kamrin Grant-Wooden in the endzone. This would seal the win for the Cubs,” Humboldt coach Matt Jennings said. “The game saw some great defense by Mason Mueller with some tackles for loss and an interception. Elijah Irby forced a fumble and recovered a fumble and many TFL’s. Waylon Johnson also forced a fumble and recovered a fumble and had many TFL’s.”

With the win, the Cubs improve to 1-2-1 on the season. They will host Caney Valley 6 p.m. next Thursday.
