Almost a month removed from their last appearance on the gridiron, the Humboldt High School Cubs received a few postseason awards from the Tri-Valley League.
Senior quarterback/defensive back Mason Sterling, senior offensive tackle/defensive end Mark McCullough, junior defensive back Gavin Gunderman and junior linebacker Broc Ivy each received All-TVL honors after staging a turnaround season at 3-6 following a 1-4 start.
Sterling’s recognition seems more of an acknowledgement of his total impact for the Cubs. Despite breaking his leg in week six, Sterling posted three passing touchdowns for 240 yards and had a team-leading 627 yards rushing and nine TDs on the ground. Sterling also received All-TVL honors at defensive back with 37 tackles, two for a loss and 21 solo tackles.
McCullough received recognition as one of the top area offensive linemen and was one of the Cubs’ most reliable performers. On defense, McCullough had 24 total tackles, was second for the Cubs in tackles for a loss with 10 and had 17 solo tackles.
Gunderman and Ivy each received All-TVL honorable mentions. Ivy had a team-leading two sacks and tied Envy Oberbeck for the team lead in tackles with 55 each. He had a team-leading 13 tackles for a loss and a pass deflection.
Gunderman had three pass deflections at defensive back and was third in tackles with 54, 40 solo tackles, and one tackle for a loss. Gunderman also shined while stepping in for an injured Sterling and had a team-leading four passing touchdowns and 300 passing yards in his limited appearances.
