The Humboldt Cubs kicked off the Pleasanton Blu-Jay mid-season tournament in a big way Wednesday night when both teams crushed Altoona-Midway in the opening round of the tournament.
The boys won 67-20 while the girls won 64-10.
The boys will go on to play Heritage Christian while the girls will take on Marmaton Valley in the second round tonight.
The boys started off strong taking a 19-4 lead after the first quarter. The Cubs upped their intensity on both ends of the floor in the second quarter, outscoring the Jets 23-3 to take a 42-7 lead into the half. A 19-5 third quarter pushed their lead to 61-12 and then they took the pedal off the gas in the fourth, allowing Altoona-Midway to outscore them 8-6 in the fourth quarter.
There wasn’t one single Cub that stood out among the rest but five different Humboldt players scored at least nine points.
Senior Hesston Murrow led the way with 12 points, senior Colin Gillespie, junior Caleb Coronado and sophomore Conor Haviland each had 10 points and senior
Jacob Barker had nine points.
Junior Teryn Johnson had seven points, senior Wyatt Seufert had four points, senior Zach Korte had three points and junior Tucker Hurst had two points.
With as potent as the Cubs were offensively, what may have been even more impressive is that Humboldt only hit two threes in the entire game.
It would be hard to top the boy’s performance but the Humboldt girls managed to pull it off.
A 24-4 first quarter set the tone of domination that would carry through for the rest of the game. The Lady Cubs offense lightened slightly in the second quarter when they scored only 14 points but they held the Lady Jets to zero points giving Humboldt a 38-4 lead going into the half. An 18-4 third quarter gave the girls a 56-8 lead headed into the final period. The Lady Cubs only scored eight points in the fourth quarter but allowed Altoona to score just two points to wrap up the win.
Senior guard Rylan Wilhite had 15 points to lead the way for the Lady Cubs while junior Maggie Johnson had 13 points to round out Humboldt’s double-digit scorers.
Sophomore Madison Gean had eight points, junior Morgan Mauk had seven and sophomore Winter Snyder and junior Aricah McCall had six points each. Junior Kaylie Johnson had five points and sophomore Alayna Johnson and junior Melanie Hallacy had three points.
The boys will play at Pleasanton’s north gym today at 5:30 and the girls will play in the south gym at 8:30.
The Cubs have not seen Heritage Christian this year while the Lady Cubs have seen and beaten Marmaton Valley 69-21 a month ago.
