Morgan Mauk anchored the top of the Humboldt batting order for the second year in a row and the sophomore brought her slap-hitting style to the next level this season.
That improvement was rewarded with a Second-Team All-State selection.
“It is great. I didn’t think I would actually make it,” Mauk said. “It honestly wasn’t on my mind at all (before the season), but I’ve always thought it would be cool.  It was a goal though. Since I really would like to further my softball career, I felt like I should have to make it sometime.”
Mauk hit .634 this season and stole 54 bases — just 12 shy of the all-time state record.
“I used to not really watch the ball that well and this year,I tried really hard to not just swing at anything and everything,” Mauk said. “It turned out pretty well.”
Even though her spot in the lineup remained consistent all year, Mauk had to deal with a position change early in the year when center fielder Aricah McCall broke her ankle.
Mauk shifted from left field to center and will likely remain there next season when McCall moves to shortstop.
“I liked center field a lot,” Mauk said. “Compared to left field, I think I had a lot more opportunities to catch the softball and field it.”
