HUMBOLDT — Uniontown High’s girls wasted precious little time in exerting its defensive dominance on the basketball court Tuesday.
The Eagles limited host Humboldt High to two field goals and three free throws in a 58-7 win.
The victory came in the first round of Humboldt’s preseason tournament. Uniontown improved its mark to 2-0. Humboldt fell to 0-2.
“We were able to get a lot of points off of our press,” Eagle head coach Ken Holt said. “We got out of it fairly quickly, but our press really caused them problems. We were able to get a lot of girls in the game, and a lot of girls contributed.”
Uniontown led 18-4 after one period and 34-6 by the break. The Cubs could muster only a single point after halftime, while Uniontown tacked on 24 points to its score.
Jacy Ermel’s 23 points, nine rebounds and six steals paced the Eagles, while Tayler Shook added seven points. Hope Jurgenson added six steals. Emily Shinn also had five rebounds.
Taylyn Wells scored three points to lead Humboldt.
Humboldt won the junior varsity contest 52-51 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer. Taylyn Wells fired in 14 points and Whitney Strack added 11 for the Lady Cubs.
