HUMBOLDT — An inability to hit free throws and take care of the ball cost Humboldt High’s boys dearly Tuesday as they saw several opportunities to seal a victory fade away.
Taking full advantage was visiting Uniontown High, which closed the game with a 27-8 run to nab a 49-42 win in overtime.
The win keeps the Eagles’ record spotless at 2-0. Humboldt falls to 0-2. The teams were competing in Humboldt’s preseason tournament. The tournament resumes Thursday as Uniontown faces Erie. Humboldt plays Crest.
“We just had way too many turnovers,” Cub head coach David Taylor said. “They would give us token pressure, and it was enough to get us crossed up or to put the ball in places where we couldn’t be successful.”
Uniontown held an early eight-point lead before the Cubs took control in the second and third quarters. Humboldt outscored Uniontown 13-4 in the second period nand 15-4 in the third.
But their 34-22 lead did not last long
The Cubs connected on only 4 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter, Taylor said.
Derrik McCall led Humboldt with 13 points, five steals and three assists. Caleb Vanatta added eight points, while Hunter Murrow had seven rebounds.
Brandon Esslinger led Uniontown with 20 points, followed by Robert Kuns and Ryan Ramsey scored eight points apiece.
