YATES CENTER — An inability to hold onto the ball cost Yates Center High’s girls dearly Friday.
The Wildcats committed “way too many turnovers,” according to head coach Abby Collins, which translated into a 57-27 loss to visiting Eureka High.
The defeat came in Yates Center’s season opener.
“We didn’t take care of the ball, and those Schwartz girls are pretty good,” Collins said, referring to Eureka’s Taylyn and Ashlyn Schwartz, who scored 20 and 13 points, respectively to lead the Tornadoes.
Eureka put the game away with a 19-6 run in the second quarter to lead 37-17 at halftime.
Autumn Douglas led Yates Center with eight points, while Cherokee Shaffer pulled down 10 rebounds. Jessica Hartwig added seven points.
Haley Pitko also scored 10 points for Eureka.
Yates Center opens its preseason tournament on Tuesday at home against West Elk.
