CARBONDALE — It took a bit longer than last week, but Iola High’s Fillies were able to decimate Santa Fe Trail for a second time. Iola beat the Chargers 53-21 Tuesday night.
This time, Santa Fe Trail was prepared to defend the Fillies’ 3-point shot. On Jan. 24, during the Burlington Midseason Tournament, Iola beat Santa Fe Trail 69-26 behind a 10-10 3-point shooting bonanza.
“I don’t think that the last time their coach was aware of how good of a 3-point shooting team we could be,” coach Becky Carlson said. “He took that away from us tonight. We chipped away at them, we only had about 10 or 11 turnovers. It was a well-played game.”
Also missing was starting point guard Sydney Wade, who is out sick. Filling in was Ashlie Shields, who contributed in a major way.
Shields lived up to the insurance company Blue Cross Blue Shield’s name. She was all over the floor, forcing turnovers and running the team in transition. She also scored 10 points.
“She did a great job. Lexie Long started, she does a good job at the point,” Carlson said. “But, that takes Lexie away from her spot. So, Ashlie came in and did a good job. When you put Shields in, the pace of the game picks up.”
The Fillies started the first quarter down 10-9. The Chargers had the hot-hand from beyond the arc, hitting two in a row to take a 6-2 lead. Emma Piazza had two steal-layup combos for four points. Toni Macha had a putback and was fouled on the play. She made the free throw, which got Iola to within one point by the time the quarter was over.
Emery Driskel shined in the second quarter. She scored the first six points, giving Iola a 15-10 lead halfway through the second half. Shields followed with her first jumper of the game. Long then had blocked a shot on defense and stole the ball. That eventually led to a putback basket from her. Macha ended the half with three points.
Iola held the Chargers to one point in the second quarter and had a 22-11 lead at the half. And then the Fillies started to roll.
The Fillies outscored the Chargers 31-10 in the second half. Iola had six players score more than four points and eight players score overall.
Iola (8-6) travels to Central Heights on Friday.
