Fillies dominate Lady Bulldogs

Iola High’s Fillies were in control from the start, which was a 6-0 run, here Tuesday night against Anderson County High’s Lady Bulldogs.
“Our intensity was great all the way through the game,” said Becky Carlson, Fillies’ head coach, after Iola posted a 39-15 win.
“We did a great job of being more aggressive on offense. Our defense was awesome.”
The Fillies pushed out to a 9-1 lead and owned a 23-8 halftime margin. By the midway mark of the third quarter, Iola was up 29-10.
Carlson said the 0-6 Lady Bulldogs just were not able to handle the pressure by Iola’s guards. Iola swiped the basketball 23 times.
Kelsey Larson had seven steals and six points and Maggie Wilson had nine points and six steals.
Kendra Taiclet had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Callahan controlled seven of Iola’s 27 rebounds.
Iola got baskets from Callahan, Taiclet and Kirstin McGuffin to open the game. A three-point play by Taiclet made it 9-1 with 4:17 left in the first quarter.
Leading 12-3 going into the second period, Callahan had a putback plus a free throw. Up 15-6, Larson pulled a defensive re-bound and went coast-to-coast for the layup at the 3:10 mark. Iola rattled off six more points, which included back-to-back transition baskets by Wilson.
Coming out of halftime, the Fillies used the first possession to score on a basket by Taiclet. Larson swiped the ball for a layup with 5:14 left in the period.
Anderson County was unable to answer. Iola kept the Lady Bulldogs scoreless in the fourth quarter until the final minute of the game.
“This was a good way to start the second half of the season. We executed very well on offense in the first half,” Carlson said. “I can’t say enough about how our players, all of them that played, did on defense.”
The Fillies shot 47 percent, 16 of 34, from the field. Anderson County had four field goals.
Iola’s one problem area of the night was at the free-throw line. The Fillies were 7 of 19 while the Lady Bulldogs hit 7 of 16 charities.
Iola did have 21 turnovers.
Jaime Mersman led the Lady Bulldogs with seven points.
Iola (5-2) travels on Friday to Girard, which improved to 5-0 with a 52-44 win over Chanute Tuesday.
In the junior varsity game with Anderson County, Iola lost 34-32. Lisa McFadden scored 15 points for Iola.
Anderson County won the freshman girls’ game 37-10. Paige Miller scored four points and Chay Hutton had three for the Fillies.
