As the 2013 softball season progressed, Iola High’s Shelby Reno and Katie Thompson became two of the Fillies’ most consistent performers on the diamond.
They were recognized for their efforts Tuesday by being announced to the All-Pioneer League team.
Reno was named to the first team. Thompson, who played first base, was named to the second team.
Reno, a sophomore, was Iola’s leading hitter in 2013 — averaging one RBI and nearly one run per contest — while hitting at a whopping .458 clip over 48 at bats. She led the Fillies in hits (22), runs (15), RBIs (16) and triples (3). She also connected on one of Iola’s two home runs this season.
THOMPSON, a senior, came into the season as one of the team’s primary defensive weapons, while Coach Vince Coons offered optimism she would become a vital cog in Iola’s offense.
She did exactly that, hitting .370, while leading Iola in doubles (9). She had 17 hits in 46 at bats and was second to Reno with 15 RBIs.
THE FILLIES ended the season with a 4-12 record, including a 2-6 mark in Pioneer League play. The Fillies’ season ended in the Class 4A regional playoffs in a loss to Parsons.
