ALTAMONT — A lack of depth hurt Iola High’s Fillies because two Fillies got hurt Thursday.
When Jazmyne Honeycutt and Molly Maxwell came up injured almost in back-to-back races, IHS head coach Marvin Smith had to scramble to find replacements for relays.
“We are very good in the events we can enter but do not have depth or distance runners,” said Smith, who was pleased that the Fillies finished third at the opening meet of the 2010 season.
“We scored a lot of points to be shorthanded. Jazmyne has a leg muscle strain and only ran the 100-meter dash. Molly took a bad fall in the 100-meter high hurdles and hurt her ankle.”
The Fillies scored 80 points and were third at the Labette County High Invitational. Girard won the team title with 125 points and Labette County was second with 88.
There were nine teams, including seven of the nine Southeast Kansas League teams were in the varsity division.
Iola also competed in the junior varsity division but results were not given to Smith following the meet. He said as soon as he received them they would be available for publication.
The Fillies’ lone gold-medal performance came from Maggie Wilson. Wilson tied her own school mark, 10 feet, 6 inches, in winning the pole vault.
Wilson also picked up a silver medal in the 100-meter dash in 12.7 seconds. Honeycutt was sixth in the race in 13.4 seconds.
Kendra Taiclet  was the silver medalist in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 53.5 seconds. She took third in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.3 seconds.
Katlyn Cleaver and Mindy Powelson went 2-3 in the shot put. Cleaver was second at 31’4” and Powelson was third at 30’10”.
Cleaver took the silver medal in the discus with a toss of 105’6”. Kirstin McGuffin placed third in the javelin with a distance of 103’11”.
Maxwell placed fifth in the high jump, going over the bar at 4’8”. Kelsey Larson was sixth at 4’6”.
“Maggie had a supper opening meet. In addition to the pole vault and 100, she ran fast opening legs on two relays,” Smith said.
“Our throwers had good marks for the wind conditions.”
Honeycutt normally anchors the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. Maxwell is her backup.
With those two out with injuries, McGuffin anchored the 4×100-meter relay. Iola took fourth in 55.6 seconds with Wilson, Taiclet and Larson on the other legs.
Wilson, Larson and Taiclet combined with Chanel Coyne, a freshman, to take third in the 4×400-meter relay race. The foursome’s time was 4:44.4.
The Fillies’ varsity goes to Paola next Friday. The junior varsity will compete at Chanute April 12.
