GARNETT — After staying close in the first half, Iola High’s Fillies weren’t able to keep up with Chanute in a 46-31 loss in Iola’s first game of Anderson County’s Bulldog-Wildcat Classic.
“They’re pretty big, it’s hard getting around them,” Iola coach Becky Carlson said. “I thought we moved the ball OK, but we were a little intimidated by their height. We hustled and had a good game plan, they’re a pretty good team.”
To start the game Emery Driskel tied the score at 2-2 with a basket from inside the paint. Sydney Wade gave Iola its only lead at 4-2 with 5:15 left in the first by hitting a jumper near the free throw line.
Chanute went on a, 8-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. Wade completed a give-and-go with Ashlie Shields. Standing at the top of the key, Wade passed it to Shields, cut inside, and gave the ball back for an easy two points to end the four-minute scoring drought.
After Addie Haar made a basket, Shields pump-faked and passed the ball to Toni Macha to tie the game at 10-10. Chanute took a three-point lead, with a 3-pointer.
Iola trailed 13-10 to end the first quarter.
Wade had her strongest shooting in the second quarter, making two 3-pointers. She narrowly missed having a third, but was a step inside the line. Iola started the quarter off with Driskel finding Macha sitting underneath the  hoop for the basket.
Iola trailed 23-20 after the second quarter.
Chanute took over in the third quarter, outscoring Iola 9-3. The Fillies scored from a free throw by Haar and two free throws by Lexie Long. Iola had two straight possessions late in the quarter, where the ball was thrown out of bounds.
Iola didn’t first score in the fourth quarter until the 1:55 mark. Emma Piazza made two free throws. On the next play Chanute’s Anna Bagshaw drove the lane for the score. She hurt the Fillies all game, leading Chanute with 13 points. The basket gave the Comets a 15-point lead at 40-25 with 5:45 left.
Later in the quarter, Chanute’s Sierra Thompson drove the lane and appeared to be well defended, surrounded by three Iola defenders. Falling over and backward, she threw the ball over her head one-handed and it went in after rolling around the rim. It must have been a sign that this game wasn’t to be for Iola.
“We just need to keep our intensity up,” Carlson said. “We’re all disappointed that we lost, but we can’t be flat and have to be ready to go.”
Iola plays Louisburg at Ray Meyer Gym at 5 p.m. Thursday.
