GARNETT — In a tightly fought game, Iola High’s Fillies came out on top 42-34 at Anderson County on Friday night. Neither team ever held a double-digit lead. EARLIER, THE JV Fillies fell in the last minutes to lose 21-20. Colbi Riley led the team with eight points, Riley Murray followed with four and Taylor Sell scored three. McKayli Cleaver and Olivia Bannister each scored two points. Toni Macha scored a free throw. THE FRESHMEN lost 30-20. Colbi Riley led the team with 11 points. Chloe Gardner followed with four points, Katie Bauer scored three and Karly McGuffin added two. Iola 42, Anderson County 34
“We just could not make a basket from the outside very much. They were fighting and clawing and we were just getting through it,” coach Becky Carlson said.
“We only had 12 turnovers, so we can’t complain about that. That girl inside (Samantha McCullough) hurt us, but no one else really did. So, as long as we stop everyone else, it’s not bad. I was very tickled to get a win. I was really proud that we kept our composure.”
After the first quarter, both teams were in single digits. Addie Haar scored the game’s first four points. Sydney Wade was on a fast break before back pedaling a pass to Haar, who tailed her as support, for a layup to make it 4-0 in favor of the Fillies. Later, Kyra Moore found Jo Lohman wide open under the hoop for a quick and easy bucket. Iola led 9-6 after the first.
With Iola leading 13-10 with 5:15 left to play in the first half, Anderson County’s Paige Scheckel converted a 3-pointer to tie the game up. Emma Piazza didn’t care. She answered right away with three points of her own. Iola was back up 16-13 with 4:35 left in the second. But, the Lady Bulldogs pulled ahead with a 6-2 run to head into halftime 19-18.
The Fillies took control in the third quarter. Emery Driskel scored the first two baskets of the second half to give the Fillies a 22-19 lead with 6:50 left. Anderson County’s Scheckel was at it again — this time making an old fashioned three. She drove through the lane, hit the layup and was fouled.
Piazza, in the same exact situation as the first half, took the same exact shot. She got the same exact result: The ball falling through the net for a made 3-pointer. Iola led 25-22 with six minutes left in the third. They didn’t give up the lead the rest of the game. Lexie Long ended the scoring the quarter with a putback basket that gave Iola a 31-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Fillies iced the game with free throws. They made 11-14, for all of their points in the quarter.
Iola (11-6) hosts Osawatomie on Tuesday, before having an extended break. They don’t play again until the season finale at Wellsville on Feb. 26.
Iola beat Osawatomie 74-12 on Jan. 9. The Fillies made a late comeback to beat Wellsville at home on Jan. 17.
“Wellsville will be the one, they’re only one game behind us,” Carlson said. “That will be the team we need to beat.”
