It was a tale of two halves for the Allen Community College women.
Struggles on defense in the first half and at the free throw line were too much for the Red Devils to over come.
Visiting Coffeyville’s 61-46 victory over ACC keeps Allen winless in Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division play (7-18 overall).
“We just didn’t do a good enough job,” Allen head coach Katie Mahoney said.
The Red Ravens shot a blistering 58 percent in the first half, much of which came from their transition game, which gave Coffeyville at 41-23 halftime lead.
Allen would have been even closer — the Red Devils shot at a 50 percent clip before intermission — had it not been for a miserable night at the free throw line. The Red Devils shot 40 percent for the night. They hit only 2 of 10 charities in the first half.
“Those were big,” Mahoney declared.
The second half was another story. Allen effectively packed in its defenders, to thwart Coffeyville’s inside presence.
“All of their scoring, except for a 3-pointer, came from the paint in the first half,” Mahoney noted. “We worked hard to keep them outside in the second half.”
The Red Ravens shot only 23 percent after halftime, but still managed to stay safely ahead by hitting 9 of 10 free throws in the second period.
O’ceonna Weston helped keep Allen within shouting distance after intermission, scoring 11 of her team-high 17 after the break. She also had 10 rebounds and three steals. Kylie Molisee added 10 points and five boards. Nicole Salazar chipped in with six assists.
“O’ceonna has really done a good job the past few games for us with her aggressiveness,” Mahoney said. “She carried us for stretches tonight.”
Devyn Edwards scored 14, Yessenia Hernandez had 13 and Jazmine Torian had 12 for Coffeyville.
The Red Ravens hit 19 of 25 free throws on the night. Allen was 8 of 20.
Reagan McClellan left the game midway through the first half after falling to the court, lying motionless briefly.
“I’m not sure if she hit her head,” Mahoney said.
McClellan remained on the bench the rest of the evening.
Allen returns to action next Wednesday at home against Neosho.
