Freshmen stand out for Mustangs in Coffeyville

COFFEYVILLE — The Iola track and field team was led by its talented freshman class again Friday in the Montgomery County Classic in Coffeyville.

Tayton Driskel has been one of the most well-rounded Mustangs all season. Driskel picked up four medals.

His top individual finish was a third-place showing in the long jump with a jump of 18 feet, 10 inches. He wasfourth in the triple jump at 38’8”.

Driskel was fifth in the 100-meter dash and picked up his fourth medal as a member of the 4×400 relay that took third.

Fellow freshman Cole Regehr joined Driskel on the successful 4×400 relay. Regehr earned an individual medal in the 1600-meter run with a personal-best time of 5 minutes, 17 seconds, for fifth place.

Regehr also was a member of Iola’s fourth-place 4×800 relay team.

Classmate Blake Haar joined Regehr on the 4×800 relay and picked up a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a 2:24.

Among the top finishing upperclassmen was Nathan Sprague. He took third in the 400-meter run with a time of 55.38 seconds.

“(Sprague) has had a really nice season,” Iola coach Dana Daugharthy said. “I look forward to seeing what he is going to do the rest of the year.”

Chase Regehr also had a good meet. He finished just behind Sprague in the 400 meters, coming in fourth with a time of 56.81 seconds. He also ran on both the 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

Jessica Oakley was the top Iola finisher on the girls’ side. She earned a fourth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 94-1.

“It was a personal best for her,” Daugharthy said. “I look for her to continue getting better.”

 

Iola’s next meet is Friday in Fredonia.
