LAWRENCE — Iola High’s Ethan Fulton didn’t have a clean run in his preliminary race Friday at the 2010 Kansas Relays.
“But boy did he have a clean race Saturday. I was so glad he got into the finals so he could have another shot at it at KU,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High’s head track coach.
Fulton, the defending Kansas Class 4A champion in the 110-meter high hurdles, got away from the runners on either side of him in Saturday’s final of the high hurdles. And he made the most of it.
Fullton captured the fourth-place medal in the high school boys’ 110-meter high hurdles. He ran the race in 14.91 seconds, which was a lot better than Friday’s 15.37 preliminary time.
“After the second hurdle, Ethan was clear of the two guys and was running in third place until the eighth hurdle. A runner from Missouri just nudged Ethan at the finish line. He really had a good, clean race,” Smith said.
Smith said Fulton’s fourth-place finish was the best individual finish for Iola High School’s boys at the KU Relays. Kevin Jukes took fifth in the 400-meter dash in 1994.
The best-ever indivudual finish at the KU Relays for Iola High School was Molly Lonergan’s high school girls’ discus championship in 2000. Smith said IHS boys have had several good finishes for relays.
