CHANUTE — Iola High’s golf team nabbed three top-10 finishes Monday en route to a third-place team score at the Chanute Invitational.
Perhaps most significantly, Iola carded the same team score (338) the Mustangs had at last year’s Class 4A regional tournament at the same golf course — in which they earned a team championship.
“I think that shows just how much the quality of golf is in southeast Kansas,” Iola coach Doug Kerr said.
And, Iola was without the services of one of its mainstays. Drake Dieker missed the tournament because of an FFA competition.
“Drake was our best golfer last week,” Kerr said. “We did a good job of stepping up, even when we’re a man down.”
Leading the way for Iola were Kaden Macha, who took second overall with a 78, and Shane Walden, one stroke behind in third.
Weston Hines placed eighth with an 82.
Other scoring for the Mustangs were Matt Jacobs, 98, and Adam Peterson, 105.
Independence had the low team score. Labette County was second.
“Hopefully, the guys can play another good round today,” Kerr said. “They’ll have some momentum going into regionals next week.”
Iola is in Garnett this afternoon for the Pioneer League Meet.
