HUMBOLDT — It was the first official points night for the Humboldt Speedway’s 2014 season, and if the McCarthy Auto Group/USRA A Mod feature was any indication, it’s going to be a banner year at “The Hummer.”
Travis Smith out-dueled John Allen tooth and nail for most of the 20-lap feature before wresting the lead for good late in the race. He claimed the checkered flag for his second ever victory at the speedway. Jeremy Chambers took third, Sten Bowers Jr., fourth and Jon Sheets, who started on the front row and led at one point, finished fifth.
The Ray’s Metal Depot/USRA B-Mod action saw Ethan Isaacs of Bonner Springs turn in a stellar performance. He bested serious competition on his way to the feature win. Jae Richards of Kansas City was second, with Andy Bryant third. Fourth went to 2013 points champion Jimmie Davis. Tim Vangotten came from deep in the field to finish fifth.
Tyler James won in the Golden Knights Billiards/USRA Stock Car feature, leading the event wire to wire. Steve Herrick took second, David Matlock third and Ken Colston fourth.
Chance Monday of South Coffeyville, Okla., made his first Humboldt appearance a memorable one, winning the Whitworth Construction Pure Stock feature. Donald McIntosh was the runner up, while Wayne Johnson was third. Fourth went to Jared Hayden, Travis Barker was fifth.
The fourth annual USMTS King of America kicks off on Thursday and runs through Saturday at the speedway.
