EL DORADO — Already off to a 2-0 start, Allen Community College’s women were well within striking distance of their third consecutive win to start the 2012-13 season Tuesday.
The Red Devils trailed host Butler County Community College by a single point with under four minutes left in regulation before foul trouble reared its ugly head.
“At that point, the proverbial wheels fell off the wagon,” Red Devil head coach Mark James said.
Allen County lost four starters to fouls, while two others were whistled four times.
Butler County took advantage by outscoring Allen by 22 points in the final four minutes. Also, it attempted 43 free throws in a 78-55 win.
“The final score was no indication at all as to what kind of game took place,” James said. “It was a very physically demanding game and had a playoff type atmosphere to it.
“Those who see only the final score may be misled by what type of game took place, but those who were in attendance … witnessed a truly hard-fought battle by both teams who gave maximum effort. Hopefully the rematch (at home Nov. 20) can produce the same high level of play with the obvious exception of a more positive final outcome.”
Brittney Redmond led Allen’s scoring with 15 points, while Miracle Davis added 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
They were the only two Red Devil players in double figures.
The Red Devils shot an ice cold 25 percent (12 of 48) from the field and committed 19 turnovers.
Butler County held a 51 to 37 rebound advantage. Officials called 59 fouls in all, 35 against Allen.
Hannah Blackwell added six points and seven rebounds for Allen. Ebonie Jones had seven points and three assists.
Allen resumes play next Tuesday at Pratt.
