The Zoie Hesse revenge tour continues as the Iola High School junior won another gold medal while competing at the Labette County Girls Wrestling Tournament over the weekend.

Hesse, 190 lbs., spent less than 5 minutes on the mat while facing three competitors in her route to the tournament title.

She opened with a first-period pin of Labette County sophomore Zoey Davis (5-6), then shaved 26 seconds off her previous time in pinning Independence junior Taylor Melugin (11-9) to break into the title match. Hesse may have expected a rematch with Fort Scott junior state qualifier Ali Simhiser(11-4), who defeated Hesse last year at state. Simhiser fell to Columbus junior Adyliyn Hutto (21-6) by third-period pin.

Hesse defeated Hutto in Simhiser and Hutto Wednesday, when Iola hosts Fort Scott and Columbus for a 5 p.m. triangular.

Iola freshman heavyweight Kailyn Rodriguez took fifth in a five-women round-robin. She lost each of her matches by pinfall. She fell to Fredonia sophomore Natalie Minor (10-8) in the first period, then Pittsburg junior Ashley Batters-Perez (16-6) in the first period, then Girard sophomore Chloe Pope (14-5) in the second period, and then Coffeyville junior Mayela Franco (8-5) in the first period.

IN JV ACTION, freshman Bayleigh Scheibmeir, 135 lbs., picked up a win. She opened with a first-period pin of Fredonia’s Laynee Roby, but fell to Elk Valley’s Trinity Shamblin by second-period pin in the quarterfinals. In the consolation quarterfinals, she defeated Independence’s Tierra Gray by first-period pin, then Labette County’s Rhyan Cochran eliminated her in the consolation semifinals by second-period pin.

Freshman Gabreal Briggs, 140 lbs., fell to Independence’s Kobie Price by first-period pin, then Neodesha’s Kaylie Novotny by first period pin.
