YATES CENTER — Humboldt High’s baseball squad took advantage of nine Yates Center errors in scoring 10 unearned runs Thursday afternoon. THE WILDCATS took a 1-0 lead to open the second game, courtesy of Gavin Dillow’s RBI single to drive in Dalton Sicka.
The Cubs hardly needed the help. They also rapped out 12 hits in a 20-0 victory.
Things were a little more palatable for the home team in Thursday’s nightcap. The Wildcats played error-free, but Humboldt still had things in control with a 13-2 win.
The victories keep the Cubs perfect at 8-0 on the season. Yates Center falls to 7-4.
Humboldt plated seven runs in both the second and third innings and six more in the top of the fourth.
It was more than enough for Grayson Pearish, who allowed four hits with two strikeouts in four innings of work.
Caleb Vanatta had two hits, including a double, while Hunter Murrow, Kason Siemens and Jacob Carpenter each singled twice. Alex Murrow had a double. Adding one single each were Jake Haviland, Caleb D’Armond and Zach Vanatta.
Robert Arnold gave up four hits and a walk in two innings. Drey Estes came on in relief, giving up eight hits and two walks. Both pitchers had one strikeout.
Trevor Chism, Justin Rossillon, Brett McGee and Blake Rutherford had singles for the Wildcats.
Humboldt responded promptly in the top of the second. D’Armond led off the frame with a double. He scored on Corey Whitcomb’s double. Austin Beeman put Humboldt on top, 2-1, with an RBI single to score Whitcomb. Hunter Murrow’s RBI single made it 3-1.
The big blow came in the top of the fourth. Caleb Vanatta’s triple unloaded the bases after Hunter Murrow, Kason Siemens and Carpenter had reached base. Vanatta then scored on a wild pitch for a 7-1 lead.
Whitcomb singled and scored on another wild pitch in the top of the fifth for an 8-1 advantage.
Rossillon singled and scored on McGee’s ground ball in the bottom of the sixth.
Alex Murrow earned the win, giving up seven hits and one run in five innings. He walked two and struck out four. Siemens came on in relief, giving up three hits and an unearned run in two innings. He struck out two.
D’Armond had two doubles and Pearish three singles to pace the Humboldt offense. Hunter Murrow and Whitcomb each added a single and double. Carpenter doubled. Caleb Vanatta, Zach Vanatta and Beeman added singles..
Dillow took the loss. He gave up 13 hits with six strikeouts. Rossillon went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Dillow, Estes and Ty Spencer each singled twice for Yates Center. Trevor Chism added a single.
