High School Track and Field: Regional Track Meets
The field is set for the 2018 state track meet Friday and Saturday at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.
A smattering of area athletes will join runners, jumpers and throwers from across the state to compete in one of the largest track meets in the country.
Below is a list of the athletes from the Registers six area school who will be making it to state along with their regional results and when theyll compete in the state track meet this weekend.
Iola
EUDORA All eyes were on sophomore Fillie Elysia Kunkler heading into the regional meet Friday to see if she could repeat her performance last year when she qualified in all four of her events.
Not only did Kunkler do just that, but she finished first in both the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.76 seconds, and in the long jump with a personal best distance of 17 feet, 10.5 inches.
She also qualified in the 100-meter dash with a third-place time of 12.89 seconds. Earlier that day, Kunkler ran the fastest time out of any runner in the meet, finishing first in the prelims with a time of 12.64.
Last but not least, she finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.70.
Kunkler was one of three area athletes to qualify for state in all four of their events (Yates Centers Hadley Splechter and Humboldts Kaylie Johnson) but she was the only one to do it in four solo events.
Kunkler will compete in the 100-meter hurdle prelims at 9 a.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday if she makes it to finals. She will run the 100-meter dash prelims at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with finals at 12:45 p.m. The 300-meter hurdles prelims will be at 11:10 a.m. Friday with the finals at 4:25 p.m. Saturday. The long jump is at 8 a.m. on Friday.
Junior Elka Billings will join Kunkler at state after a third-place finish in the 800-meter run. Billings went into the race ranked as the fifth-best runner and was in fifth with 200 meters left but she found another gear and finished third, missing out on second by .01.
Billings will compete on Saturday at 5:05 p.m.
Humboldt
FREDONIA The Cub boys and girls qualified a handful at their regional meet Friday.
Junior Kaylie Johnson led the way for Humboldt with two first-places finishes.
Johnson finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 3503 before tying the school record set by Vickie Stanley in 1981 in the long jump with a distance of 171.
