HUMBOLDT — Whenever the Lady Cubs tried to show a hint of life, the Fredonia Yellowjackets snuffed it out. It was the story of their life Friday evening. A SIMILAR pattern was evident Thursday for Humboldt in a 53-40 loss to Erie.
Humboldt lost the matchup at home, 64-48, after four quarters of pounding offense from Fredonia. They started fast and rarely let up, although the Cubs did their best to stay above water.
The Yellowjackets went up 10-2 to start in the first, before Megan Hudlin hit a pair of free throws and a layup. Lakote Wilson nailed a trey before the clock expired in the first, making the score 20-9.
That initial boost was enought for Fredonia to hold on for the rest of the game. From time to time, the Lady Cubs would pull to within a 10 or 11 points, but the Yellowjackets always had a response. The halftime score was 38-23.
The Cubs pulled to within 11 in the third with some contributing buckets from Tilar Wells and Makayla McCall. The fourth quarter had the Cubs down 51-37.
Tilar Wells and Makayla McCall led for the Cubs with 10 points apiece. Lakota Wilson had nine and Delaney Umholtz had six. Kayle Riebel chipped in with eight points and two blocks. Madison Kellar had four points. Anna Whitcomb had three reobunds.
Delanie Umholtz had two points, as did Morgan Morris. Morris also had two steals.
Cheyenne English and Wells had four rebounds apiece.
“The shots just weren’t going in for us,” Humboldt head coach Sherri Nelson said. “It wasn’t for lack of effort.”
