Humboldt keeps regional title at home

HUMBOLDT — Hot off sweeping the Tri-Valley League earlier this month, the Humboldt Lady Cubs added regional champion to their resume after sweeping the competition Monday night. 

While hosting their 2A regional quad, the Lady Cubs swept Belle Plaine 25-11, 25-10, Eureka 25-13, 25-14 and Erie 25-11, 25-17 while en route to the sub-state tournament Saturday. 

Against Belle Plaine, senior outside hitter Ricklyn Hillmon had the only block of the contest and a team-leading eight kills, followed by junior setter Lakyn Meadows with four. Senior libero Skylar Hottenstein had a team-leading four aces while also leading Humboldt in digs with 13, followed by senior middle hitter Laney Hull with eight and freshman outside hitter Brynna Ellis with seven.

Hillmon had 13 kills against Eureka while Hull and Meadows had three each. Hottenstein tied Hull in aces with three each and had 12 digs, followed by Brynna Ellis with seven and Hull with six. 

Hillmon wrapped up the evening with 14 kills against Erie, followed by Hull with seven. Hottensetin had three aces, followed by Hull and Brynna Ellis with one each. 

Hottenstein was also the team leader in digs with eight, just ahead of Meadows and Brynna Ellis with six each. 

Following Monday’s run to the regional title, the Lady Cubs enter Saturday’s sub-state tournament with a 32-9 record. At press time the bracket for Saturday’s sub-state tournament were not available.
