Six Humboldt Middle School teams took on Leon-Bluestem on Monday. Five walked away with victories.
The Cub boys started things out with a 16-15 win for the eighth-graders.
“I told the players it is better to win ugly than lose pretty,” head coach Jeremy Weilert said. “We were good when it counted in the fourth quarter though. We were down one to start the quarter. We took control of the ball with over a minute to go up one and we were able to take care of the ball the entire time to run out the clock. I am very proud of the players for picking up a road win.”
Ethan Doepke had six points and four rebounds in the win. Drew Wilhite had four points and four rebounds, Evan Lucke had four points and two rebounds, Gavin Page had two points and four rebounds and Colton Johnson had three rebounds.
Then the seventh-grade boys got a 27-12 win.
“This game was close for a half,” Weilert said. “We had a 10-6 lead at halftime. We scored 17 second-half points while holding them to six in the second half. We are getting better every game.”
Trey Sommer had a big game with 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Brennen Nuessen had nine points and two steals and Maddox Johnson had four points, three rebounds and two steals.
The boys C-Team wrapped things up with a 10-6 win in a one-half game.
Kaden Barnhart and Simon Stephens had two points and two rebounds, Cooper Woods had two points and a block, Chris Gonzalez had two points, a rebound and a block and Andrew Watts had two points.
Meanwhile, the Humboldt girls started things off with a huge 42-18 win for the A-Team.
“The girls started off sluggish but really came to life in the second half,” head coach Jason Weilert said. “We really ran our offense well and got quite a few good looks and were able to make them.”
Nautianna Goforth had a big 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Madi White had eight points and five steals and Kirstyn Murrow had six points.
The Lady Cubs B-Team won 44-33.
“The ladies looked very good at the press at times and also ran our offense well at times,” Weilert said. “We will continue to have to work on being better at playing our man defense if we want to have more success this year.”
Karley Wools had 24 points and nine steals in the win and Emily Ross had eight points and five rebounds. Laken Hunter also grabbed five rebounds for herself.
The girls C-Team finished things off by falling 23-8.
