Humboldt teams roll past ’Streaks

NEODESHA — Humboldt High’s softball team opened the 2014 season on a tear Tuesday.
The Lady Cubs sandblasted host Neodesha 22-0 in the first game and 17-0 in the second.
“We hit the ball extremely hard,” Humboldt head coach Brad Piley said, noting the Lady Cubs racked up 22 hits in the first game and 16 in the second.
Those were more than enough for Humboldt’s pitchers. Courtney Richey pitched a three-inning perfect game, striking out seven. Jaci Ross had things well in control in the nightcap, allowing just two hits in five innings. She walked one and struck out five.
Humboldt scored multiple runs in every inning of both games. The Lady Cubs scored five in the first, eight in the second and nine in the third in game 1.
Breanna Kline had a single, two doubles, a stolen base and two RBIs. Brook Turner singled twice, stole a base and had two RBIs. Mallory Roush had two singles and an RBI. Richey had two doubles and two triples and three RBIs. Delaney Umholtz had two singles, a home run, two stolen bases and two RBIs. Ross singled. Morgan Morris had two singles, a double and five RBIs. Kasey Beeman had a single, double and an RBI. Tilar Wells chipped in with a stolen base. Kayle Riebel had two singles, two stolen bases and three RBIs.

THE FUN continued in the second game.
Humboldt led 5-0 after one, 8-0 after two, 11-0 after three, 13-0 after four and 17-0 at the end of the fifth.
Kline doubled, swiped two bases and drove in two. Turner doubled. Roush had a single, two doubles, a stolen base and RBI. Richey pounded out two more doubles. Riebel had two singles, a double, a triple and seven RBIs. Umholtz singled. Ross doubled. Hannah Hulett added two singles and two stolen bases.
“Courtney was impressive on the mound,” Piley said. “Jaci also pitched a nice game for us.”
In baseball action, the Cubs rolled to wins of 23-0 and 20-0. No other details were available by press time.
Humboldt is at home Thursday against Erie at USD 258’s new sports complex east of Humboldt. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.
