Humboldt wins battle for Allen County

Iola and Humboldt will have to wait another 365 days before renewing their Allen County rivalry on the court next season.

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs picked up a pair of wins over Iola’s eighth-grade volleyball teams.

In A team action, Humboldt brought home a 25-14 and 25-12 victory.

The B team matchup was tightly fought, with Humboldt prevailing, 25-18, 21-25 and 15-12.

“These girls played so hard and really made Humboldt work for every point,” Iola head coach Aubrey Westhoff said. “It wasn’t the outcome we wanted but it was so fun to watch them play as great as they did.”

In the B team matchup, Iola was led by Willow Cremmer with four and Gabriela Guerrero-Geisler, with three aces. London Hutton and Helena Morrison added two each. Brynna Jelinek had an ace and 10 good passes. Leanna Flory had five good passes.

Cora Boren served up eight points for the Mustang A team. Ember Friend and Hilary Gean added five each.

IN SEVENTH-GRADE action, Iola won a 2-1 thriller.

After splitting the first two sets, the seventh-grade A team trailed late before Elliot Sigg spearheaded a massive serving run to nab the win.

Humboldt’s seventh-grade B team won, 2-1.

Statistics from the seventh-grade matches weren’t immediately available.
