COFFEYVILLE — Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade girls broke open a close game Monday by outscoring their hosts from Coffeyville 20-8 over the second and third quarters to win 37-18.
The eighth-grade squad struggled offensively in a 30-9 loss.
“The girls just weren’t ready to play tonight, but they came out and played a much better second half,” head coach Marty Taylor said of the seventh-graders.
Iola led 8-4 after one quarter and 18-10 at the break before a 10-2 run gave them a 28-12 lead after three quarters.
Toni Macha and Sydney Wade both scored 12 points to lead Iola. Macha also had 11 rebounds. Riley Murry added four points and eight boards. Jayden Sigg scored three points, while Lexi Heslop and Brecken Sutherland scored two points apiece.
“Sydney saw the floor very well tonight,” Taylor said. “Riley played much tougher tonight.”
The eighth-grade squad failed to score in the first quarter and trailed 14-2 at the half. Coffeyville outscored Iola 12-2 in the third period to lead 26-4.
Taylor Sell led Iola with four points and five rebounds. Hannah Ingle and Ashlie Shields both scored two points. McKayli Cleaver scored one.
“Not one of our better efforts,” Taylor said. “We have to step off the bus ready to play basketball.”
Iola travels to Independence Thursday.
