A bright, sun-lit day provided the backdrop for the 2011 IMS Invitational track meet Tuesday. A cast of over 1,000 athletes gave track and field fans plenty to cheer about.
There were 13 meet records set in the four divisions of competition. Four records were established in a new event — actually a revised event.
For years, athletes ran the 75-yard, then 75-meter hurdles at the IMS Invitational. This year the race was stretched to 100 meters.
So four runners set the standard for the event Tuesday. In the seventh-grade girls, Iola’s Blaze Hobbs won the 100-meter hurdles in 19.00 seconds. Trey Eaton of Girard was the seventh-grade boys’ winner in 17.42 seconds.
Rachel Stevenson of Edna won the eighth-grade girls’ race in 17.78 seconds. Taran Smith of Meadow View ran the longer hurdle race in 16.45 seconds for eighth-grade boys.
Nineteen schools had competitors in the meet at Riverside Park. Chanute’s Royster Middle School won team titles in the eighth-grade boys and girls’ divisions and the seventh-grade girls’ division. Girard’s seventh-grade boys claimed the team title in its division.
Royster’s Maddie Dispensa set meet records in the eighth-grade girls’ 3200-meter run, 12 minutes, 34.60 seconds, and in the 1600-meter run in 5:56.73. The old marks in those races were set in 2009 by Hadyn Herlocker of Girard, 12:47.90 in the 3200 and 6:03.2 in the 1600.
Baylie Jones of Osawatomie broke a meet record set in 1988 by Allen of Bartlett. Jones won the eighth-grade girls’ 800-meter run in 2:35.38, which was lower than the 2:40.2 by Allen.
Isiah Taylor of Parsons now owns the meet’s high jump records in both seventh and eighth grades. He won the eighth-grade high jump Tuesday, clearing 6 feet. The old mark was 5’10” set by Washburn of Chanute in 2001. Taylor set the seventh-grade mark of 5’6” last year.
In seventh-grade boys’ competition, Hunter Pankey won the long jump with a new record of 17’2”. The old mark was 16’1 3/4” set by Meyer of Le Roy in 1991. Mason Skiles of Anderson County won the 1600-meter run in 5:23.28, which was better then 5:25.40 set by Cale Hedges of Anderson County in 2008.
Girard’s seventh-grade medley team won in meet record time of 1:57. The old mark was 1:58.88 by Iola in 2009.
The seventh-grade girls saw the 400-meter dash record set by Gwen Sibley of Anderson County. She ran it in 1:06.89. That was faster than the 1:07.5 in 2002 by Marmaton Valley’s Lacey Backes.
Girard’s seventh-grade girls posted a meet record time of 2:11.53 in the medley relay race. The former record was 2:13.94 run by Pittsburg in 2009.
