PITTSBURG — Iola Middle School’s basketball squads wrapped up the regular season at Pittsburg Thursday, contending with a series of athletic Purple Dragon squads.
In eighth-grade A team play, Pittsburg rolled to a 40-7 victory.
“Pittsburg is a very athletic team, but we certainly didn’t help ourselves,” Ponies head coach Marty Taylor said. “These girls will be ready for the games this weekend.”
Colbi Riley scored four points to lead Iola. Katie Bauer followed with two. Chloe Wilson scored one.
The eighth-graders return to Pittsburg this morning for a tournament. Play begins at 10 a.m. against Fort Scott. An 11 o’clock game follows against Parsons.
The seventh-grade A team wrapped up its season with a 23-18 defeat.
“Our second half was the best we played all year,” Taylor said. “These girls improved every game. The more experience they get, the better they will be.”
Madisyn Holloway led the seventh-graders with eight points. Charvelle Peterson followed with four. Piper Moore, Mia Aronson and Shaylee Sutterby scored two each.
In B team action, Pittsburg prevailed in the eighth-grade game, 11-9. Scout Rush had four points, Madison Carlin three and Addy Prather two for Iola.
Pittsburg’s seventh-grade B team downed Iola, 18-7.
Kendra Sprague led Iola with four points. Savannah Puckett had two points. Jennifer Tidd scored one.
