The Iola Middle School Volleyball Team wrapped up its season Saturday at the Pioneer League Tournament.

The Mustangs took a pair of losses to Santa Fe Trail and Prairie View, but Iola coach Aubrey Westhoff did not let a few losses spoil a great season.

“We didn’t have the outcome we wanted, but I finally saw the girls do things that we have been hoping they would do throughout the whole season,” Westhoff said. “They blocked one of Santa Fe’s strongest players, and they had some amazing volleys.  I’m excited to see what these girls do when they move on to high school.”

In the opener against Santa Fe Trail, the Mustangs fell 25-6 and 25-9. Cora Boren’s one ace was good enough for a team best. She also had 14 good passes for the team lead, followed by Leanna Flory with 10, then Hilary Gean and Moira Springer with four each.

The Mustangs were a bit more formidable against Prairie View. They fell 25-14 in the first set, but roared back in the second to fall by the narrower margin of 25-21 to end the year.

After just one ace in the opener, Boren had five in the finale, followed by Gean with two and Flory with one. Boren also had team-leading 23 good passes, followed by Flory with 10, then Keira Goranson with eight and Gean with seven.
