Iola AA American Legion baseball split with Garnett in a doubleheader on Thursday. Iola lost game one 7-4 and won game two 10-2.
After the first two innings in game one, there was no score. That quickly changed in the third inning. Garnett struck for 7 runs and held onto that lead the rest of the game.
Iola didn’t get on the board until the fourth inning, when Derrick Weir hit an RBI-double that scored C.J. D’Armond — he reached on a single and stole second base.
In the fifth inning, Iola added two more runs. After Keanen Badders led off with a double, Drew Faulhaber hit him in on a fielder’s choice. Kason Siemens then reached on a single. Ethan Sigg hit Siemens in on a single of his own.
Iola added one more run in the sixth inning.
Hunter Murrow led the inning off with a single. Two outs followed. Weir came up to the plate and again produced an RBI-double. It was the final run of the game for either team.
Other than the one bad inning — the third in game one — Iola turned it around. In game two, the bats produced and won the game 10-2.
“They responded well,” coach Roland Weir said. “I challenged them to hit and they did. In the first game they didn’t string together more than two hits in any inning.”
The Indians (4-2) play at Chanute in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Sunday.
