Iola High’s freshman volleyball team hosted Anderson County and Louisburg Thursday night, winning both matches.
For the first match, Iola never trailed in 25-17 and 25-10 set wins against Louisburg.
“Louisburg is traditionally pretty strong, and I thought we played relatively well,” coach Jeff Fehr said. “I think it sort of showed we played a little too lackadaisical. We had to come back and fight for it in that second match, which is always good.”
Anderson County pushed back in the Fillies second match, forcing three sets. In the first set Iola won 28-26. At one point, the Fillies were losing 17-22 but worked the score to a 24-24 tie.
In the second set, Iola wouldn’t be able to produce a comeback losing 17-25. The Bulldogs took an 8-2 advantage to open the set, and never let up.
The tiebreaker was all Fillies, taking an early 5-1 lead and turning it into a 15-6 victory.
Fehr said getting to the third set was a battle, and that if his team could hold serve, they would be fine. Fehr said his team was serving better than the Bulldogs.
“Traditionally, whenever we play Anderson County, it always goes three,” Fehr said. “No matter if we’re better or worse.”
The Fillies served 74 percent in the first match, and improved to 81 percent against Anderson County. Madi Carlin, Karley McGuffin, Colbi Riley and Carly Cescon were leading servers. Carlin led the team with assists. Riley and Katie Bauer led the Fillies in kills. Chloe Gardner and Sophie Whitney kept the ball in play, leading with digs.
The Fillies (6-2) will square off at Wellsville, along with the varsity and junior varsity teams, at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
