LA CYGNE — Iola High’s  golf contended with narrow fairways, unforgiving rough and lots of hazards Thursday at the Pioneer League Invitational, hosted by Prairie View High School.

Xander Sellman led his team with a 90 and finished in 19th.

“Xander found the rough a lot today, but managed himself well and played bogey golf,” head coach Jeremy Sellman said. “The competition is tough and very tight in scoring.  You know when 20 kids shoot under 90 it’s a good group of golfers, so I’m pretty happy with his playing.  I know there were some mistakes, but he limited them and kept himself in control.”

Chris Holloway shot a 95 and finished 26th.

“Chris was playing well on the front nine and then ran into some trouble on the back,” Coach Sellman said. “The rough was thick from all the rain and it was hard to find a ball in it.  That cost him some strokes for sure, but I think Chris was battling fatigue towards the end. His playing partners were very slow and when you’re waiting around, it’s hard to stay focused.  Chris putted well and had a good read on the greens.”

Ethan Harris finished 43rd by shooting a 124.

“This was a tough course for Ethan, but he just keeps impressing me with his mental approach,” Sellman siad. “He keeps his head up and just plays his own way. He never seems to get down on himself and he stays positive. Good things will come his direction. He is a quick learner and a good listener.”

Iola’s golfers will be at Fort Scott Monday for the Class 4A Regional Tournament.
