Iola High’s junior varsity baseball team picked up a pair of home victories Monday, defeating Anderson County, 5-1 and 9-5.
Quick starts in both games propelled the Mustangs.
Iola scored four in the first of game one, with a single by Benjamin Kerr and back-to-back doubles by Ashton Hesse and Grady Dougherty keying the rally. Gavin Jones doubled and scored on Kele Michael’s single for the fifth run.
The second game was keyed by a seven-run rally in the second inning, including a home run from Hesse. Mc Leonard and Lucas Maier added doubles in the frame, while Kerr, Payton Houk and Korbyn Fountain all had singles.
Leonard, Kerr and Hesse all singled in the fourth before Dougherty smacked a double as part of Iola’s two-run fourth inning to make it 9-1.
Anderson Country made things interesting in the top of the fifth and final inning by scoring four times before Iola slammed the door.
Hesse wound up with a double and single in Game 2, while Leonard and Kerr each had a single and double. Dougherty and Maier also doubled. Adding singles were Houk, Keynan Stahl, Jones and Fountain.
Iola’s JV hosts Yates Center on Thursday.
