Iola Middle School held its annual IMS Wrestling Classic at the high school Tuesday night.
“Overall, the young men wrestled hard,” coach Jason Bates said. “It’s difficult to practice with only three wrestlers that all are at different weights and ability. Each day they come into the wrestling room understanding our obstacles and continue to work past them.”
Jeremy Ridge went undefeated in the 95-pound weight class to win first place. He defeated Central Heights’ Matt Cubit twice with major decisions. In the first match, Ridge won, 12-0. Ridge won the second match, 14-0.
Iola’s Sam Trabi went winless in the 110-pound division. He lost to Royster’s Logan McDonald in the first period. Trabi lost his second match to Anderson County’s Zack Wilper in the second period. Iola’s Trabi lost his third match by a major decision to Prairie View’s Hunter Boone, but he did have a great takedown.
John Lynn went 2-2 for third place in the 155-pound division. He beat Burlington’s Keegan Kuhlmann in the second period and Anderson County’s Landon Lyons in the third period. Lynn’s losses came to Southeast’s Gage Large and Coffeyville’s Jonothan Biby.
“Ridge won his first tournament this season and Lynn won his first matches tonight,” Bates said. “Sam, although all he sees are wins and losses, we, as coaches, notice that this was the first time he made it all three periods in a match that he has lost.”
IMS wrestling travels to Independence Monday.
