Iola’s Collins finishes two strokes from state 4A golf tournament

GARNETT — On Monday Iola High’s Kris Collins, a sophomore, came within two strokes of qualifying for the Kansas Class 4A State Golf Tournament.
Collins carded a 91 with rounds of 45 and 46 at the Kansas Class 4A Regional Golf Tournament at Garnett Country Club golf course. He ended up in 14th place.
The top two regional teams, plus the top five individuals not from those teams, qualify for state. Collins was the sixth individual player not on the top two teams.
Anderson County High’s Bulldogs won the regional title on their home course with a 313. Jack Rickabaugh led the Bulldogs by winning the top medalist honors with a 73.
Ottawa was second with a 342 followed by Paola at 344 and Louisburg at 375.
The Mustangs finished fifth as a team in the 18-hole event. They combined for a 389.
Columbus was sixth at 436 followed by Fort Scott at 443 and Girard at 463.
Osawatomie’s Bryce Waggoner had an 89 to get the fifth individual spot. Paola had three players qualify and Louisburg had one player qualify.
Iola’s Doug Stewart shot a 98 (50-48). Jarrett Mosbrucker (50-50) and Nick Jacobs (57-43) each had a 100.
Zach Crawford finished with a 101 (53-48) and Sam Shallah had a 106 (50-53).
Iola did not have a senior on the 2010 squad.
