OSWEGO — Hard-fought competition turned into heartbreak for Marmaton Valley Junior High’s volleyball team.

The Wildcats, playing at a triangular in Oswego, took the host Indians to three sets, but saw the host Indians take control with consecutive four-point runs to clinch the 2-1 win, 25-17, 16-25 and 15-12.

Likewise, Marmaton Valley was locked in a heated match with Thayer, winning the opening set, 26-24.

But the Flyers rebounded with a 25-14 win to even the match, and then a wild back-and-forth tiebreaker saw Marmaton Valley rattle off four straight points to even the score at 13-13.

But Thayer scored the next two to secure the tiebreaker, 15-13.

Marmaton Valley’s B and C teams also took on Oswego, with the Wildcat B team falling in straight sets, 25-10 and 25-20.

The C teams split their two matches. The Wildcats won the opener, 15-9, before Owego prevailed 15-6 in the second.

IN FOOTBALL action, Marmaton Valley played what head coach Dan Uhlrich said was its best game of the season against undefeated Oswego.

The Wildcats were within two points with 5 minutes remaining, and had possession, but the Indians closed with a kick, to secure the 28-18 victory.

“‘This was a very close and hard fought game,” Wildcat head coach Dan Uhlrich said. “We were physical and played our best game of the season. Oswego has a good ball club. Our energy and effort was good. We didn’t get a single two-point conversion, and there are other things that need to be corrected, but I saw many positives.”

Marmaton Valley hosts Pleasanton next Thursday.
