HUMBOLDT — Two of Humboldt High’s leading contributors on the softball diamond brought home state honors for their work.
The Lady Cubs’ Breanna Kline and Courtney Richey each earned second-team all-state recognition in Class 3A by the Kansas Association of Softball Coaches.
The duo led the way as Humboldt captured a regional title and advanced to the state tournament in Manhattan.
A sophomore, Kline earned second-team, all-state honors for the second straight year.
As Humboldt’s  starting shortstop, Kline batted a whopping .500 (30 of 60) with 26 runs in 18 hits. She rapped out 19 doubles and three triples, with 15 RBIs in 18 games. She stole 24 bases and registered a .719 slugging percentage.
Richey starred in the pitching circle and at the plate for Humboldt.
As a pitcher, she went 10-2 with a 1.03 earned-run average. In 70 innings, she struck out 124 batters, while allowing 14 runs, only eight of which were earned. She pitched five shutouts, including two no-hitters and four one-hitters. Richey also had more wins than walks (eight).
Her batting prowess was just as prolific.
Richey hit at a .574 clip, 35 of 61, with five home runs and 28 RBIs. She swiped 22 stolen bases and held an on-base percentage of .635. Her slugging percentage was greater than 1.000, head coach Brad Piley said.
And she’s just a freshman.
