Lady Cubs, Cubs fall to Chargers

CHERRYVALE —  Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs and Cubs were unable to get things started in their second games in as many nights.
The Cub teams lost a Tri-Valley League doubleheader to host Cherryvale High Tuesday.
Humboldt’s girls struggled mightily on offense, mustering only 11 points for the game — and five over the final three quarters — in a 53-11 loss to the Lady Chargers.
“We need to be more aggressive to allow more opportunities and to limit our opponents,” interim head coach Craig Smith said. “The game was dictated by free throws.
Cherryvale led 16-6 after one period and 34-8 at halftime. The Lady Chargers upped their cushion to 49-11 by the end of the third period. Fredonia hit 27 of 43 free throws.
Six players scored for the Lady Cubs, none of whom had more than a single field goal. Meanwhile, Cherryvale’s Mary Reilly scored 15 to pace the Chargers.
The Cubs found themselves down by four, 14-10, at the end of the first quarter. Cherryvale pulled away from the Cubs in the second period, pouring in 22 points while Humboldt could get just nine points on the board.
That was the difference in the game. Cherryvale went on to a 62-40 win.
The Cubs and Chargers each tossed in 12 points in the third quarter. Humboldt trailed 48-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Chargers outscored the Cubs 14-9 down the stretch.
Humboldt did not have a player reach double-figure scoring. Tanner McNutt had nine points and Hunter Murrow scored eight.
Noah Thornbrugh controlled 12 rebounds and blocked four shots. McNutt made three steals.
Cherryvale’s leading scorer was Trenton Loganbill with 11. Two others had nine points.
Humboldt travels to Eureka Friday.
