HUMBOLDT — With the regular season coming to a close, “it’s no rest for the wicked,” Humboldt High girls head coach Aubrey Jones said.
With makeup games dotting the final week of play, the Lady Cubs played the first of four games in seven days Friday.
Visiting Eureka scored the game’s first 11 points, and while Humboldt showed spurts of effectiveness, the Lady Cubs came out on the short end of a 60-31 defeat.
“When we took care of the ball, and boxed out and executed our game plan, we were right with them, and doing what we needed to be doing,” Jones said. “It’s when we took those plays off that it came back and bit us, hard.”
Humboldt responded after the early lull. Karly Wools hit a short jumper to cap a 9-2 Humboldt run, closing the gap to 13-9.
Eureka bounced back with another 14-0 run and led 28-15 at the break. Another 15-2 Tornadoes run to start the third quarter put the game out of reach.
Wools led the way for Humboldt with 10 points, followed by Jada Dangerfield with nine.
“Karly did a good job attacking,” Jones said. “Izzy (Isabelle Murrow) gave us a big spark from the bench. Carsyn (Haviland) came in and gave us some good minutes. Our bench really played hard tonight.”
Eureka’s balanced scoring was a sight to behold. Not counting the four players who came off the bench in the waning seconds, all eight Tornadoes players had at least two field goals and scored between four and 10 points.
“They’re a good team. They play hard, and they’re well coached,” Jones said. “
The Lady Cubs play tonight at Caney and Tuesday at Cherryvale before wrapping up the regular season Thursday at home against Yates Center.
