HUMBOLDT — An early hiccup in the form of a single and home run put Humboldt’s softball team in a 2-0 hole after half an inning against visiting Eureka Monday.
That was about all that went wrong for the Lady Cubs, who cut the gap to 2-1 after the first inning, then plated eight in the second and six in the third.
The resulting 17-2 victory was followed by a 15-0 romp to push Humboldt to 10-1 on the season.
The Lady Cubs travel to Burlington Thursday before getting a breather in their schedule. They don’t return to action after Thursday until hosting a tournament April 22.
Karley Wools singled and scored on an Emily Ross single to get Humboldt started in the opener.
The Lady Cubs then took full advantage of an error, walk and hit batter to lead the bases before a wild pitch evened the score at 2-2. Another passed ball put Humboldt in front for good. Brooklyn Ellis singled in two, Shelby Shaughnessy doubled in two more, and Carsyn Haviland’s RBI triple suddenly had the Lady Cubs leading 8-2. Laken Hunter tacked on an RBI single for a 9-2 advantage.
Kirstyn Murrow kept the fun going in the third inning with a two-run home run. Shaughnessy singled, Haviland tripled and Hunter doubled to cap the six-run rally.
Ross ended the game with an RBI single in the fourth, after the spread reached 17-2.
Ellis allowed three hits over four innings with five strikeouts.
Ross doubled and singled twice with two RBIs. Shaughnessy singled and doubled and drove in three. Murrow had two RBIs with her home run. Wools singled and scored three runs. Haviland had a pair of triples with two RBIs and two runs. Hunter singled and doubled with two runs and an RBI. Morgan Sterling scored three runs without an official at bat as a courtesy runner.
Shaughnessy handled the pitching duties and allowed nary a hit over three innings. She walked two and struck out six.
Humboldt wasted little time exerting control on offense, scoring 11 in the first to take control.
Ross blasted a two-run home run after already driving in two with a single during the outburst.
She wound up with four RBIs and three runs. Murrow singled twice and an RBI and three runs. Wools tripled, drove in one and scored two. Shaughnessy singled twice with four RBIs. Haviland singled and scored twice. Hunter drove in a run and Chloe Daniels singled.
