FREDONIA — Host Fredonia High jumped out to an early lead against visiting Humboldt High’s girls and won convincingly enough, 52-25.
Despite the defeat, Humboldt coach Craig Smith found reason for optimism.
‘’The girls are giving more and more every day and they are making progress,” Smith said. “Everyone who supports our team should be proud of their efforts.”
Fredonia jumped out to a 15-5 lead after one quarter and 25-10 at halftime. The Yellowjackets outscored the Lady Cubs 19-10 in the third period to lead 44-18.
“Our guards’ offensive play was much better tonight,” he said. “A lot of our turnovers came in the halfcourt and their pressure didn’t dominate our movement or tempo.”
Humboldt’s Sheri Middleton led the way for Humboldt with 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Kristen Todd had three assists.
Tuesday marked the third game in a row that Middleton, a freshman, has scored at least 14 points.
“She is doing a nice job for a freshman,” Smith said.
Morgan Finley led a balanced scoring attack for the Yellowjackets with 11 points. Eleven Fredonia players scored in the contest.
The loss ends the regular season for Humboldt, which opens Class 2A substate play next week.
