Lady Cubs sweep Caney Valley

Humboldt's softball team picked up its 16th and 17th straight victories Monday as the Lady Cubs blasted Caney Valley to wrap up the regular season. Next up is the 2-1A Regional Tournament next week.

CANEY — Humboldt High’s softball team was clicking at the plate and from the pitcher’s circle  Monday in a doubleheader sweep of Caney Valley.

Humboldt’s Emily Ross went deep twice in the opener, while Brooklyn Ellis pitched three perfect innings to roll to a 19-0 victory.

The fun continued in the nightcap, with Humboldt batters racking up 23 hits in a 17-1 romp.

The victories put Humboldt at 17-2 as they prepare for the Class 2-1A Regional Tournament, which opens Monday. 

Matchups have yet to be announced.

Humboldt took control in the opener with a 13-run second inning.

Other offensive stars were Carsyn Haviland, who had a pair of singles, two stolen bases and two runs; Kirstyn Murrow, who had a single, a stolen base, an RBI and three runs; Karley Wools, who had two singles, two RBIs and three runs; Isabelle Murrow, who singled, stole a base, drove in two and scored twice; Ellis, who had an RBI; Kady Hart, who singled, stole a base, drove in a run and scored once; Madison Riebel, who singled, tripled, had an RBI and scored twice; Laken Hunter, who stole two bases and scored three runs; and Kennisyn Hottenstein, who stole two bases with a run.

HUMBOLDT led 5-0 after one and tacked on six runs in both the second and third innings.

Ellis pitched two scoreless innings with a walk, while Wools came on to pitch an inning, allowing two hits.

Wools hit her first home run over the fence to lead the offense, along with scoring three runs, stealing two bases and driving in one.

Kirstyn Murrow added a single, triple, an RBI and a run; Isabelle Murrow had a single, double, two stolen bases, an RBI and two runs; Ross chipped in with a single, Ellis had a double, triple and three RBIs; Hart had a single, double, stolen base, two RBIS and three runs; Riebel had a double, RBI and run scored; Haviland stole a base and scored a run; Kirsten Koboldt notched an RBI; Hunter had two stolen bases and three runs; and Hottenstein scored three times.
